What is mindful movement?
There are many kinds of mindful movement. The type of mindful movement we focus on is the practice of moment-by-moment non-judgmental attention to what is happening in the body and mind as we move and interact with our environment, music and sometimes a community of people. We focus on mindful movement that involves both structure and creativity and we have found this practice to offer exceptional benefits to mental and physical wellbeing.
For a small taste of what the practices we offer are like, check out our 5-minute mindful movement experience on NPR.
Where does this practice come from?
There are many different practices that incorporate elements of mindful movement. This includes ones listed on the Inspirations page - with whom I have spent collectively 1000s of hours practicing and training over the past two decades. There are many other mindful movement practices beyond this too, and we recommend continuing to explore and experiment to find the right practices for you. Humans have been doing practices like what we do for perhaps 40,000 years - as a way to connect to themselves and each other.
What does The Mindful Movement Initiative do?
Our work centers around:
The distillation of specific, highly effective mindful movement practices into bite-sized modules that are easy to learn.
Quantifying the benefits and deeply understanding the mechanisms in which they are delivered - via partnership with top university labs.
Making these practices accessible to the broadest possible audience with the goal of greater well-being and large-scale positive impact.
